Your Complete Guide to Paint Sheens: What to Use in Every Room
Picking the right paint finish is more than just about color! It’s about how a room feels, how it functions, and how long that freshly painted look will last. The sheen you choose affects durability, cleanability, and the overall style of your home.
At Meulenberg Painting & Decorating, we’ve been in the painting business for over 30 years, and we’ve learned that sheen is one of the most overlooked — yet most important — parts of a paint project. Using the wrong finish can make a room harder to maintain and even force you into costly re-dos down the road.
Here’s our guide to choosing the right finish for every room.
Understanding Common Paint Finishes
Each paint sheen has a different level of shine and a different job to do:
- Flat → Zero shine. Perfect for ceilings and low-traffic areas. Flat hides imperfections beautifully but is not designed for scrubbing.
- Matte → Soft and subtle. Ideal for adult bedrooms where you want a calm, cozy feel. Like flat, it hides wall flaws but with a touch more durability.
- Eggshell → The “just right” middle ground. A favorite for living rooms, dining rooms, and even kitchens or baths. Easy to wipe down and has a gentle glow without being shiny.
- Satin → We recommend satin for trim and cabinets, but not for walls. While it’s smooth and durable, satin is extremely difficult to touch up. Even small touch-ups often mean repainting the entire wall, which is why our team never recommends it as a wall finish.
✨ Pro insight from our team: Eggshell is the highest sheen you should use on walls. It’s durable, cleanable, and much easier to maintain than satin when life happens.
Best Paint Finishes by Room
Living Rooms & Dining Rooms
Eggshell is the go-to for these spaces. It softens natural light, offers durability, and keeps walls looking fresh without too much shine.
Bedrooms
Matte finishes create a peaceful, quiet vibe in adult bedrooms. Eggshell is also a safe option if you want just a hint of glow. For kids’ rooms, eggshell is preferred — it’s easier to clean than matte without creating that overly shiny look.
Kitchens & Bathrooms
High-moisture, high-traffic areas need something durable. Eggshell works beautifully here. It resists humidity, stands up to splashes, and wipes clean — all while keeping your space polished.
Hallways & Entryways
These walls see backpacks, shoes, and plenty of wear and tear. Eggshell again is your friend. It has just enough sheen to make cleaning easy, but won’t highlight every scuff the way higher sheens do.
Trim & Cabinets
This is where satin shines. It brings durability and a smooth finish to trim, doors, and cabinets — areas that get bumped and touched daily. For homeowners who want even more pop, stepping up to a semi-gloss can highlight woodwork beautifully.

It’s easy to underestimate how much the right sheen matters — until you’ve lived with flat walls in a busy kitchen or had to repaint a satin wall just to fix one small mark.
